Assistant Coach – 7th/8th Red (Junior Division) 

Joe Hannigan is the Assistant Coach of the Lovejoy Leopards Junior Division 7th/8th Red team. Joe has more than 40 years of lacrosse experience as a player and coach. Joe began playing lacrosse at the age of 9 in his hometown of Long Island, Manhasset, New York, where lacrosse tradition runs deep. Joe attended Manhasset High School, which was the first high school on Long Island to field a lacrosse team in 1932.

While at Manhasset High, Joe was a two year letterman as a Midfielder. Joe earned All-Conference honors his senior year. In 1983, Joe was selected to play in the All Star Seniors Game, making him the first All-Conference player in Nassau County, New York history to play in the All Star Seniors Game. Joe’s high school teams were named Division Champions in 1982 and 1983. 

After high school, Joe continued playing lacrosse for club teams.  From 1985-1995, Joe played for the New York Lacrosse Club in Westbury, New York. Then from 1996-2000, Joe played for the Arena Lacrosse Club in Port Washington, New York. During this same period, Joe was involved with the Central Atlantic Lacrosse League, which later changed to the American Lacrosse League (the nation’s largest men’s post collegiate club lacrosse league).   

Joe began his lacrosse coaching career in 1984, when he was named the Varsity Assistant Coach and the Junior Varsity Co-Head Coach of the lacrosse teams at St. Mary’s Catholic High School in Manhasset, New York. Joe led his teams to an overall record of 31-6 and were named the Catholic League Champions in 1984. 

In 1996, Joe was named the Co-Head Coach of the New Canaan Youth Lacrosse Program in New Canaan, Connecticut. Joe coached the program for 5 years where he amassed a 37-15 record.

In 2000, Joe moved to Texas and resumed coaching lacrosse at several area programs. From 2000-2002, Joe was the Head Coach of the Episcopal School of Dallas’ 5th/6th grade team. In the Spring of 2001, Joe was also named Head Coach at Plano West High School, the school’s inaugural lacrosse season. From 2003-2006, Joe was the Head Coach of the St. Mark’s School of Texas’ 5th/6th grade developmental teams. Joe led his St. Mark’s teams to an overall record of 34-10. In the Spring of 2007, Joe was the Assistant Coach at New Canaan High School in new Canaan, Connecticut.   

Joe joined the Lovejoy Leopards Lacrosse program in the Fall of 2011, where he has coached the Junior Division teams.

In addition to coaching, Joe continues to be involved in lacrosse as a promoter of the sport, introducing and teaching the sport to both players and parents. In the Summer of 2002, Joe headed the Camp Weequahic Lacrosse Program in Lakewood, Pennsylvania. Joe was also instrumental in starting the 1st/2nd grade and 3rd/4th grade boy’s lacrosse programs at St. Mark’s School of Texas. Joe has also taken part in several clinics in New York and Texas teaching lacrosse to children. On November 2, 2001, Joe was featured in two articles in the Texas Living and Fitness & Leisure sections of The Dallas Morning News, which discussed the growth of lacrosse in Texas and explained the sport of men’s and women’s lacrosse.

Joe’s passion and knowledge of lacrosse runs deep and he is a strong ambassador for the sport. Joe believes in building young lacrosse players’ abilities with drills, skills, fundamentals, and mostly hard work.
