HISTORY

The Lovejoy Leopards Lacrosse Program is located in the Lucas and Fairview, Texas area, two small communities in North Texas, roughly 35 miles north of Dallas. The Lovejoy Leopards Lacrosse Program was started in the summer of 2009 by Bobbi Gilbert, a parent in the Lovejoy independent school district. Bobbi started the lacrosse program because her son wanted to play lacrosse in his “hometown” and for his own school.

The Lovejoy Lacrosse Program started with 2 teams – a 5th/6th grade team and a 7th/8th grade team. They played their first game in the Fall of the 2009 school year with the bare minimum of players required to field each of the 2 teams. Although not an official UIL sanctioned school sport, the Lovejoy school district and the athletic director fully supported the lacrosse program from the beginning, allowing the lacrosse program to use school facilities for practices and games.

Since that first year, the Lovejoy Leopards Lacrosse Program has grown tremendously. Participation and player enrollment has grown each year. The Lovejoy Leopards Lacrosse Program now has competitive teams from 1st grade through Varsity High School. In the Spring of 2015, our program saw the largest percentage increase in player registrations, with more than 150 Lovejoy boys registered and playing lacrosse. Our program was able to field a total of 8 teams from 1st grade through High School, with multiple teams at most of the youth levels.

The Lovejoy Leopards Lacrosse Program is proud to say that lacrosse is the only sport in the Lovejoy school district area that provides the opportunity for its students to play a sport and be a Leopard from 1st grade all the way through High School.

In 2013, our Varsity High School team won the Division-III state championship, which included some players from the very first Lovejoy Lacrosse team in 2009. Our High School team has since moved up in competition to Division-II. In 2016, our 7th/8th grade Black team won the DFW Youth Lacrosse city league D-II championship and our 7th/8th grade Red team reached the D-III semi-final playoff game.

Lacrosse is played year round in the Lovejoy Leopards Lacrosse program. We have two seasons – Spring and Fall. The Spring season is the primary lacrosse season. Our Spring season begins mid-January and ends in early May. Our teams play between 10-15 games and participate in league playoff games. Our Fall season begins in September and ends in November. Our teams play between 5 – 8 games, in scrimmages, and participate in local lacrosse tournaments.

Lovejoy Leopards Lacrosse is a club sport and as such receives no funding from the Lovejoy Independent School District. Parents pay a fee for their children to play and the program attempts to raise funds in various ways throughout the year to help supplement the high cost related to operating the Lovejoy Leopards Lacrosse program.
